Looking for a place where everything is under one roof? Remember this name: MWG, for Mekka World Gourmet. It's in Casablanca, in the Californie neighbourhood, on the corner of boulevard la Mecque and allée de la Koutoubia. You go in for a croissant. You come out with a platter, a box of chocolates and an ice cream.
Much more than a bakery
MWG makes everything in-house. The easiest way is to go round section by section.
- Viennoiseries: all-butter croissants and viennoiseries, for breakfast.
- Bread: sourdough loaves and bakery specialities.
- Pastries: signature entremets, fruit tarts, and revisited Moroccan cakes.
- Chocolate shop: bars, marshmallows and sweets. The video mentions Belgian chocolates.
- Artisan ice cream: a dedicated corner, with ice-cream sundaes.
- Savoury: snacks, aperitif platters, aged cheeses and charcuterie.
- Fine foods: handy when you're looking for a gift.
The creations people talk about
This summer, trompe-l'œil creations were the talk of the town: pastries that mimic a fruit or an object so convincingly you could be fooled. In the shop's photos, you'll also spot little kadaïf nests filled with pistachio, fruit or chocolate, presented in gift boxes.
For celebrations, MWG also makes custom creations: birthday cakes, wedding pieces, platters for a private or corporate reception. You place your order and the team designs the piece with you.
Behind it all is pastry chef Omar. According to the shop's website, he has worked at major houses in Morocco and abroad, including Opera Paris Kuwait, and a book has been devoted to his work. He combines French technique with reinvented Moroccan sweets.
The atmosphere
The place is modern, with a dark interior lit by spotlights and a shop that shows off the products. There's a terrace. You can stop for a coffee, an ice cream sundae or a pastry without necessarily leaving with a bag.
In the morning, it's the spot for a quick breakfast. In the afternoon, for a sweet break. And at the weekend, it's where you pick up the cake before heading to the family.
When to go
MWG is open every day, from 7 am to 9 pm. The website promises products made fresh each morning, seven days a week. For the full choice of pastries, it's best to go early.
For a birthday cake or a reception platter, don't leave it to the day before. The website offers a quote request for custom orders, and an online shop to browse the house's ranges before you go. You can also call directly.
Our verdict
What sets MWG apart is the range. Few places in Casablanca bring together pâtisserie, bakery, chocolate shop, ice cream parlour and delicatessen under one roof. The risk is buying too much.
